Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls, and Houston Rockets Off-Season Preview May 18, 2024May 18, 2024 Continuing with the off-season previews, I will be discussing the Hawks, Bulls, and Rockets. Included in this preview are team’s contracts, options, free agents, draft picks, and cap space. I will dive into each team’s top priorities and biggest needs as well as best draft and free agent fits. Check out the links below for the teams I have previewed already: Pistons, Wizards, and Hornets Off-Season PreviewTrail Blazers, Spurs, and Raptors Off-Season PreviewGrizzlies, Jazz, and Nets Off-Season Preview Atlanta HawksUnder Contract:Trae Young: 3 Year Left – $138M (5 Years – $215.16M), Extension Eligible, Last Year has Early Termination OptionDejounte Murray: 4 Years – $114.07M, Last Year is Player OptionClint Capela: 1 Year Left – $22.27M (2 Years – $45.88M), Extension EligibleDe’Andre Hunter: 3 Years Left – $69.91M (4 Years – $90M)Bogdan Bogdanovic: 3 Years Left – $49.3M (4 Years – $68M), Last Year is Team OptionOnyeka Okongwu: 4 Years – $61.98MJalen Johnson: 1 Year Left – $4.51M (4 Years – $12.89M, Rookie Contract), Extension EligibleKobe Bufkin: 3 Years Left – $15.71M (4 Years – $19.8M, Rookie Contract), Last 2 Years are Team OptionsA.J. They only played 2 years together, but they weren’t able to win more than 41 games, missing the playoffs entirely this year. Changes are coming for the Hawks, and it’s very likely one of these two players will be traded this summer. It just a matter of who will be traded and what they get back in return.Start a full rebuild: The alternative route the Hawks could take is starting a full rebuild. They have the number 1 pick in this year’s draft, and the next couple of draft classes are supposed to be loaded with talent. They could trade Trae Young, Dejounte Murray and other veteran players for a plethora of first round picks. However, the picks they would get in return would likely be mid-to-late first round picks and the Hawks don’t have their own first round picks in the next 3 drafts. It’s more difficult to start a rebuild without your own picks and having no control over your future draft positions. This scenario is not very likely, but the idea should be thrown out there. Finally trade Capela: The Hawks have a quality center in Onyeka Okongwu, who should have been the starter for the past 2 years. Capela is on an expiring contract worth $22.3M and is eligible for an extension this summer. They need to trade him and get assets in return while they still can.Who do you select with the 1st pick?: The Hawks are lacking frontcourt depth, especially if they trade Clint Capela. Alexandre Sarr would fit in perfectly at the power forward spot next to Okongwu and would boost their defense while providing offensive upside. However, as I mentioned earlier, the Hawks will likely trade Trae Young or Dejounte Murray leaving a gap in the backcourt. Stephon Castle would also be a great fit and could slide right into the starting lineup, providing immediate help as a perimeter defender. With that said, I believe Alex Sarr would be the best option and will ultimately be picked in the draft, but Stephon Castle deserves some consideration here as well.Trade Exception: The Hawks have a $23M trade exception that expires on November 11th, 2024. This adds flexibility to their potential trade options if they choose to use it.Draft Fits:1st Pick:Alexander SarrStephon CastleZaccharie RisacherFree Agent Fits:No cap space to sign free agents. The Bulls have missed out on playoffs the past two seasons, losing to the Heat in the play-in tournament both years. Bringing back the same team puts the Bulls over the cap and gives them little flexibility to improve the roster. They need to do everything they can to find trade partners for Zach LaVine, Alex Caruso, Lonzo Ball and Nikola Vucevic. It might be a year too late to receive many assets for these players due to injury concerns, age, and a decline in their performance, but they should be able to come away with a few draft picks. They can become one of the worst teams in the league and have a top pick in the next couple draft classes that are loaded with talent.Sign-and-trade DeMar DeRozan: As an unrestricted free agent, DeRozan can choose where he goes without any control from the Bulls organization. However, if I’m the Bulls, I can’t let DeRozan go for nothing in return. They need to try to complete a sign-and-trade to get some assets back.Re-sign Patrick Williams: Williams is only 23 years old and could be part of the core moving forward with Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu. They could also sign-and-trade him as well, especially if they draft a guy like Cody Williams.Draft Fits:11th Pick:Ron HollandCody WilliamsTidjane SalaunFree Agent Fits:Bol BolGoga BitadzeLonnie Walker IV Houston RocketsUnder Contract:Fred VanVleet: 2 Years Left – $87.73M (3 Years – $128.54M), Last Year is Team OptionDillon Brooks: 3 Years Left – $63.37M (4 Years – $86M)Steven Adams: 1 Year Left – $12.6M (2 Years – $25.2M), Extension EligibleJalen Green: 1 Year Left – $12.48M (4 Years – $40.81M, Rookie Contract), Extension EligibleJabari Smith Jr.: 2 Years Left – $22.12M (4 Years – $40.33M, Rookie Contract), Last Year is Team OptionAmen Thompson: 3 Years Left – $31.2M (4 Years – $40.01M, Rookie Contract), Last 2 Years are Team OptionsJock Landale: 3 Years Left – $24M (4 Years – $32M), Non-GuaranteedAlperen Sengun: 1 Year Left – $5.42M (4 Years – $15.55M, Rookie Contract), Extension EligibleTari Eason: 2 Years Left – $9.37M (4 Years – $16.26M, Rookie Contract), Last Year is Team OptionCam Whitmore: 3 Years Left – $12.38M (4 Years – $15.6M, Rookie Contract), Last Year is Team OptionOptions:Jeff Green: Team Option – $9.6MJae-Sean Tate: Team Option – $7.07M, Extension EligibleFree Agents:Reggie Bullock (UFA)Boban Marjanovic (UFA)Aaron Holiday (UFA)Draft Picks:3rd Pick44th PickCap Space:Projected Maximum Cap Space: $5.6MTop Priorities/Team Needs:Run it back or star hunt?: The Rockets took a major leap this year, winning 41 games up from 22 games from the year before. We know they want to win now, but going after a star player may hinder the development of their young players. We still don’t know what some of these young guys could be long-term. They should run it back and let this team develop for another year or two before trading for a star. With internal development, they could make the playoffs next year anyway.Do you extend Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun?: Both players are eligible for an extension this summer. Alperen Sengun exploded onto the scene as the Rocket’s best player, and if the front office thinks he’s a first or second option on a contending team then I can see them giving him a max extension. As for Jalen Green, he played like a superstar during their 11-game winning streak. However, he was not great the rest of the season and he hasn’t been efficient or consistent enough to earn a max contract. If he’s willing to sign a smaller contract, then they should extend him and see if he continues to develop. If not, let him play out his final year to prove himself. He becomes a restricted free agent, so the Rockets could re-sign him if they choose to do so.Trade or keep the 3rd overall pick: The Rockets are looking to take the next jump, trying to make the playoffs next year. If they are star hunting, they could trade this pick as part of the deal. However, there are players in this class that could be a great fit and fill holes in their roster. Donovan Clingan or Reed Sheppard could be immediate contributors for this team and help push this team to the playoffs.Draft Fits:3rd Pick:Donovan ClinganReed SheppardFree Agent Fits:Jae CrowderReggie BullockAaron Holiday
